Many homes these days have some type of shutters in order to enhance the look and feel of the house and give it more of what is known as curb appeal. There are all sorts of options for exterior wooden shutters that you can choose from. Think about what sort of function you want them to perform in order to help you narrow down the options that are available to you and get the shutters that would best suit you and your home.

One type of exterior wooden shutters is the board and batten shutter. These are made from thick boards and can be closed in order to shut out all light and weather. Those who prefer to have more flexible shutters will probably enjoy louvered shutters, most of which allow you to adjust the louvers to get the amount of light and privacy that you prefer. Of course on nice days, you might want to have your shutters totally open and hooked against the side of the house, which is possible with many types of shutters.

Although exterior wooden shutters that actually function will give your home the most added value, you can also choose either functioning or non functioning faux wood shutters, such as vinyl plantation shutters. You can get indoor window shutters as well as the exterior shutters. If you want something different from what you see or if you have odd sized windows you can also get custom exterior shutters. Non functioning shutters are simply attached to the exterior walls of your home in order to give the appearance of shutters. These are less expensive than the other options, and are common especially on homes with vinyl siding since many siding companies offer coordinating styles that you can purchase along with your siding.

Cafe shutters are another style. These cover only the bottom or top half of the window, allowing for some privacy and light reduction while still giving the option of checking out the view without obstruction. As the name suggests, these are common in restaurants and cafes, but they are also used in private homes. These are common on the first floor.
